Singer Spotlight: Daniel Lopez

Tell us a little about yourself! Where are you from? What is your educational and musical background?

I'm from Ohio, and I have a BM from Otterbein University and a MM from the University of Wisconsin - Madison.

What is one thing you wish you had known as a young singer and why?

Crossing over into contemporary music does not make you less of an opera singer.

Tell us about an obstacle you have faced during your career and how you overcame it.

I had serious technical issues in my singing. I overcame it by finding a teacher who could address those issues clearly and directly and being diligent with my practice. I also took time away from opera, doing more straight theater/film/musical theater work while I focused on refining my operatic singing technique. This allowed me to really address the issues from scratch, as opposed to trying to put a band-aid on a fundamentally flawed technique.

What is one role or piece you could perform over and over and never get tired of?

Tony - West Side Story. If we're talking opera exclusively, then probably Don Ottavio.

If you could only give one piece of advice to a young singer, what would it be?

Get your technique in order so you have the freedom to forget about it when you're onstage (or in an audition room).

Is there anything you spent too much time stressing over that didn't end up being a big deal?

Everything other than delivering consistently good performances.

Where can we catch you performing next?

I have a short film coming out this festival season and a feature that was just released, but singing-wise, I'm hoping I'll have a bit announcement to make soon. Can't say anything just yet.
