About Lara

Soprano Lara Wasserman regularly performs with several groups in Dallas, including the Orchestra of New Spain and the St. Michael Compline choir. In addition to her choral singing, Lara has sung the role of Lucy in Jake Heggie’s Again at the Center for Contemporary Opera in New York City, as well as the roles of Zerlina in Don Giovanni, Cunegonde in Candide, and Madame Goldentrill in The Impresario. She has performed scenes from Arabella as Zdenka, Le Nozze di Figaro as Susanna, and Manon as Manon. She has appeared with the University of North Texas Baroque Orchestra singing solos from Haydn’s Missa in angustiis and with the Lawrence Symphony Orchestra singing solos from Handel’s Messiah.

In June of 2011, Lara completed her Bachelor of Music degree at Lawrence University where she studied with Steven Paul Spears. She has had the pleasure of singing in master classes with Dale Duesing, Jake Heggie, Cynthia Lawrence, Carol Vaness, and Roger Vignoles, among others. Lara is a native of Iowa City, Iowa where she began taking piano lessons at age four and violin lessons at age twelve before beginning her voice study at age fifteen. She completed her student teaching in the Fox Valley during the 2010-2011 school year. In May of 2018, Lara earned her Master of Music degree in vocal performance with an emphasis in choral conducting at the University of Northern Iowa where she studied with Dr. Jean McDonald and Dr. John Wiles.

A lifelong athlete, Lara began practicing yoga late in college to stay in shape and become more flexible. After practicing for several months, she realized that the benefits of yoga went beyond her body; her mind and spirit had transformed as well. Lara practices a variety of styles, from Vinyasa, to Bikram, to Hatha. She loves to combine yoga and music, and specializes in yoga practice designed specifically for singers. Her spunk and wit invigorate her classes, and much like yoga, she is constantly evolving and growing in her personal practice and her teaching. She completed her 200-hour teacher training with Deborah Williamson and is also a Certified Teaching Assistant.

When not onstage or at the gym, Lara spends much of her time going to concerts, writing, and exploring Dallas with her husband. She started designing and making jewelry in high school, and her passion for fashion eventually led her to a job working at The Limited, where she worked for two years. While attending Lawrence, Lara was the copy editor of the University’s newspaper, The Lawrentian. After college, Lara started her own blog, and her writing skills were eventually noticed: she has done freelance writing for Dallasites101, as well as writing and editing content for several local entrepreneurs.
