Singer Spotlight: Erin Roth Thomas
Tell us a little about yourself! Where are you from? What is your educational and musical background?
I have my bachelors and masters in music performance from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas.
What is one thing you wish you had known as a young singer and why?
I wish I had realized that there isn't just ONE road to a "successful" music career. There are a lot of different roads, and "success" is what you make it.
Tell us about an obstacle you have faced during your career and how you overcame it.
In the same vein as the previous question, I struggled a lot with what I defied as “success.” When I was younger, I thought that I had to be singing opera on a stage somewhere to be "successful," and I realized pretty quickly that I didn't want to live that lifestyle (traveling so much, etc.). I had to come to terms with the fact that I wasn't giving up on my dreams by deciding not to pursue an opera career, but my dream was just changing as I grew up a little bit. Now, I'm working in a great city with lots of wonderful opportunities and I'm making a full-time living as a singer.
What is one role or piece you could perform over and over and never get tired of?
I absolutely LOVE An American Requiem by Richard Danielpour. It is a beautiful setting of the Latin Requiem text juxtaposed with the poetry from American writers, and it has an amazing mezzo solo that I've been lucky to perform only once. It's definitely on my bucket list to sing again.
If you could only give one piece of advice to a young singer, what would it be?
As difficult as it may be, try to be patient with yourself as your skill matures and develops. It takes a long time. Be kind to yourself.
Is there anything you spent too much time stressing over that didn't end up being a big deal?
I used to worry about pleasing everyone. I had to let go of that really quickly, because I realized that no matter how hard I tried, someone was not going to like me. Once I let that go, it was quite freeing.
Where can we catch you performing next?
I'm heading into summer right now, which means I get a little bit of downtime (yay!!!), but I'm looking forward to performing with Diversita Opera and Dallas Chamber Choir over the summer, as well as singing with Verdigris Ensemble, Orpheus Chamber Singers, Highland Park Chorale, and Dallas Bach Society next season.
