Singer Spotlight: Will Liverman
Tell us a little about yourself! Where are you from? What is your educational and musical background?
I'm originally from Virginia Beach, Virginia and I just recently moved to Philadelphia. I studied voice at Wheaton College and The Juilliard School.
What is one thing you wish you had known as a young singer and why?
I wish I had known the importance of learning how to speak a foreign language. It's very beneficial to know how a foreign language is constructed when you're singing. It adds a deeper level of understanding what you're saying and makes things easier to memorize.
Tell us about an obstacle you have faced during your career and how you overcame it.
Uncertainty and doubt. These are things that I still struggle with, but I've learned more and more to accept the unknown and trust that things will work out no matter what. I realized that worry is worthless!
What is one role or piece you could perform over and over and never get tired of?
Papageno in Magic Flute! Always fun and can be played so many different and hilarious ways.
If you could only give one piece of advice to a young singer, what would it be?
Put in the work. Be OVER prepared for everything you do. Someone is always watching. As cliche as it sounds, hard work and determination can be the slight difference between you getting the job over someone else.
Is there anything you spent too much time stressing over that didn't end up being a big deal?
Making mistakes in a show or having a not so great performance. We're not perfect and just about everybody will forget whatever it is you're kicking yourself for. Don't dwell on something you botched in a show. Learn from it and keep it moving!
Where can we catch you performing next?
In the city of brotherly love, Philadelphia! Up next is The Love for Three Oranges with Opera Philadelphia. Check us out if you're in the area! After that is Philip Glass's Ahknaten at The Met.
